I was elected to Hayden City Council Seat #2 and sworn in January 11, 2022.
I moved to north Idaho in 1994 and have been a Hayden resident since 2004. I received my B.S. in Education from the University of Idaho. I am a retired school teacher and coach, and continue to coach football at Lake City High School.
This is my first time in an elected position. I was encouraged to run by the citizens of Hayden who are concerned that growth and density are erasing the small town feel that Hayden has historically been known for. It is vital that the people become more involved in the process that determines the direction of the city of Hayden. I will strive to be a voice for the people as we move forward.
In my spare time, I enjoy attending car shows with my classic vehicles. I enjoy fitness and spend a great deal of time attending sporting events.
I believe that Hayden can continue to be a great place to live and raise a family. I believe that Hayden is a unique community with many opportunities. I believe that Hayden can continue to maintain a “small-town” feeling if the people become involved and participate in the decisions that will determine our future.

Tom Shafer was born and raised in Connecticut. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. When not working part-time as a principal engineer at a telecom firm, or in his new role as city councilman, Tom loves to ski, ride his bikes, work on projects in his shop, or with Sherry on their garden.
